Chateau Angelus, Saint Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classé “A”, Bordeaux, 2016 Tasting notes
Chateau Angélus is a bit hidden just outside of Saint Emilion. It has been said that in the old days on this property you could hear the church bells of no less than three churches sounding the Angélus (a Roman Catholic prayer). And that is why the chateau is called Angélus. Not many Bordeaux chateaux have managed to remain family-owned over the years. Angélus is still owned by one of Bordeaux’s oldest wine families, the family de Boüard de Laforest. It is the eighth generation that has started working here but it remains Hubert de Boüard de Laforest who makes the wine.
Carillon d’Angélus (18 points)
[75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc]
Beautiful intense color with a bit of a lighter rim. Pleasant nose with a nice expression of red fruit. On the palate there is a striking powerful red and black fruit. Lovely freshness and a decent length. Well made.
Chateau Angélus (19+ points)
[75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc]
Even deeper color than the Carillon with a sparkling ruby color with some purple hints. Great freshness with beautiful silky tannins. Round ripe and very long. Succeeded well in this vintage, although I found a bit less complexity than in the 2015. Beautiful roundness and exemplary precision in the fruit. Hubert de Boüard created another great Angélus.
