With Gérard Perse of Chateau Pavie

With Gérard Perse of Chateau Pavie

Bordeaux 2018 Vintage Special-Chateau Pavie 2017 tasting notes and ratings

I tasted the Pavie in the tasting room of the chateau overlooking the vines and in the presence of the owner, the sympathetic Gérard Perse.

Chateau Pavie 2017 (19 points)

Chateau Pavie 2017 (19 points)

Aromes de Pavie 2017 (17,5 points)
[65% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon]

Inky black wine with some purple. The nose is rather expressive with intense red (cooked) fruit. The Aromes de Pavie is rather dominated by the influence of the barrels. The wood tends to overpower the discreet, jammy fruit a bit. Decent length

Chateau Pavie 2017 (19 points)
[60% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon]

The signature inky black color with a discreet purple rim, even more intense than the second wine. On the nose there are strong, almost heavy aromas of concentrated cooked fruit. This wine smells almost jammy. It is in the style of Pavie which has faithful followers. In the mouth this is a heavy, full-bodied wine that seems to be made for the American market. The wine shows a slight deviation of the signature style of Pavie of the last 10 years. Although Pavie is heading towards less extraction the wine shows a strong concentration of jammy fruit and lots of alcohol and a very strong influence of the oak. It is well made but this is not your traditional Bordeaux and it is a style you have to like.
