Ronald tasting Pavie 2021

Ronald tasting Pavie 2021

2022 Bordeaux Wine Magazine: Pavie 2021 tasting notes and ratings on futures and ratings “en primeur” by Ronald Rens, M.Sc., Wine Master, Bordeaux Expert

The horses were working diligently to plough the vineyard at Pavie when we were there under a beautiful sunshine. For me there is always a special Dutch link with the chateau because Gérard Perse’s wife is from the Netherlands.

Pavie 2021

Pavie 2021

Aromes de Pavie 2021 (17,5 points)

[50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc]

The color seems slightly less inky black than usual but remains still very intense. The nose is jammy and shows rather pleasant aromas of cooked fruit and sweetness. On the palate I found the typical wood-dominated influence that tends to overpower the discreet fruit tones. This is in the style so representative for the chateau.

Chateau Pavie 2021 (19- points)
[52% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon]

The Grand Vin seems less inky black that in the previous vintages. On the nose we find aromas of a jammy cooked fruit but with a bit more interesting complexity than in the second wine. On the palate the wine seems not to have found its direction yet. Alternating between an avalanche of not-unpleasant ripe, cooked fruit and the typical wood-dominated structure we know so well of Pavie. Fortunately, we can see a gradual reduction of this wood domination over the las few years. The wine is good, but for me it is a style completely different than the other wines of Saint Emilion. But it is a style that has its faithful followers.
